A very tiny laptop (7-inch)
We are going to launch a brand new product later this year. The reason to launch this product is that some handheld game players are also the fans of laptop, and they are very interested at this laptop which is easy to type and carry. Also for some geeks they are also quite fancy this tiny laptop. Therefore we are going to launch this product. The product is currently named "Pocket", meaning it is the laptop which can be put into the pocket.
Actually, it can indeed be put into the pocket. It is slightly larger than GPD WIN, and because it employs CNC integrated color aluminum process,with extremely narrow frame with 7-inch screen design, also it has QWERTY keyboard, so that the overall layout is very compact and tiny.
Here are the basic configuration of the product:
CPU:8700
RAM:4GB
ROM:128GB
Screen: 7-inch IPS screen, full lamination technology, Gorilla glass 3
Battery currently: 7000mAH

Re: A very tiny laptop (7-inch)
Trackpoint should be in the G,H,B keys. This way when you type, you do not need to move your hand to use the mouse pointer.

If you can, I prefer to make an option for the non-glare LCD panel.
That makes perfect for business usage.

And why you don't make 8gb of ram? Price will be not bigger, but in 2017 4gb is very low for os and other staff.

Re: A very tiny laptop (7-inch)
Hello,
you can make a more usable keyboard like this,
a little larger
Symbol keys like {}:"<>? are more related to Shift and have better use with this layout.
You need to make ALL keys just a little smaller and there's no need to connect them together.
The trackpoint position is very good as it is now. GHB makes sense on a thinkpad (or other large laptop) but at this size it makes more sense to have the hand on it AND also on Click buttons. I have a SONY VAIO P from the first generation. The key sizes should be very similar to those on the vaio - (that is a very good keyboard for it's size). VAIO P has the trackpoint on GHB but you can't do clicks without cursing )
- anti-glare screen would be very nice;
- no webcam would be also nice;
- 8 GB ram option
- if you would put power switches for wireless/microphone/webcam - this would be very appreciated by security conscious guys - and will keep the battery longer if not used
- an option for a linux (tux) key (even if would require to change it myself)
Good luck

Re: A very tiny laptop (7-inch)
Almost forgot:
PLEASE use smaller font on QWERTY.. keys. and leave a little gap on other characters, don't put the symbols on button's edge.
thanks

I'm sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense. You use the trackpoint with your index finger and click with your thumb. As I mentioned earlier, the whole idea is to seamlessly transfer between typing and mouse. Also having the buttons so close would make it uncomfortable, like you're trying to pinch on it.
If you're using your thumb to operate the trackpoint, you're using it wrong. You can't even control the cursor properly that way, you can't apply pressure evenly while moving the trackpoint and clicking like you said.

Hi, just info.
I think this topic seems to be more focused to HW specification and configuration. I'm personally more interested in Ubuntu support.
I've created another topic for discussion. I'm glad if more request/discussion happen about Linux on GPD Pocket.

I'm using the middle finger to operate the trackpoint.
Now, on a regular (large) keyboard it makes sense to have it on GHB because there is more space between the keys, the whole keyboard is bigger, your hand is relaxed - but this isnt the case.
This will have smaller keys with less space between them, click buttons will also be smaller - if you want to use GHB position your fingers will always be close to each other with your hand contracted which results in muscle strain.
If you want the feeling you get on a thinkpad you need to use TYG / YUH and make the click buttons larger - but even like this, the keys are smaller.
Most people are not used with a trackpoint keyboard, for them the trackpoint is just "a mouse like thing" so it makes more sense to use it like this:
- middle finger on the trackpoint;
- index finger on the left click;
- ring finger on the right click.
I hope it makes more sense now.
Edit:
What I'm more interested is the whole keyboard layout - I made the layout mockup above based on a picture I got from liliputing
This was the original, if you don't know what I'm talking about.

@tnak
that is one very unusual layout
Edit:
My opinion in changing the original layout is to have a layout very similar with the regular keyboard layout we're all used to.

@habberjohn
your opinion makes a key pitch more narrower:
VAIO P: 16.5mm
original/my opinion: 16mm
your opinion: 15mm
I guess 16mm is a little stressful, 15mm is more stressful.

In Polish language alt Gr is important for polish chars.
Please add this.
other needed but not very important
in terminal pg-up-down is useful, i rather use touchpad not red joystick. In my opinion ideal is solar panel for this laptop GPD Linux.

I'm talking about this VAIO
That 1mm does not make a difference. I'm european and I have big hands . The VAIO keyboard is very usable for it's size. The only key being problematic is the Shift key - NOT because is small but because is before the UP key (awkward position).
Now in your layout suggestion almost every symbol key is in an unusual place. More than that, it would require to toggle special keys each time you want to type a symbol.
The layout I suggested keeps symbols on keyboard, mostly in their natural position (excluding {}) by moving them one row down - including the shift. This doesn't affect your muscle memory, but changing each key position will force you to re-learn key positions every time you change this device to other.
Now, if you don't write code, you're not a sysadmin, etc, you're just browsing the web, your layout doesn't matter too much, but if you are, good luck at cursing your keyboard when you're on a go and want to quickly write some idea or do something

Re: A very tiny laptop (7-inch)
Hi, I have been "pocket pc" user for many years, my first pocket computer running windows was in 2004, Sony Vaio U50
So there are a lot of things to consider.
I completely agree with comments about track stick placement, your original plan is not good, since you cannot click and move the mouse at the same time, by putting track stick next to "mouse button". Forefinger of hand must operate track stick, and thumb of either hand can operate "mouse buttons". Please note all other successful manufacturers that do this. Sony, Dell, HP, etc.
On the screen, is it a touch screen? I think this is necessary, and it should at least be 3 point/multipoint. 5 would be better. 10 is unnecessary.
Also, you do not give the screen resolution, but you should at least be full HD resolution, 1920 x 1080 .... there are many Windows applications that do not work properly in lower resolutions. Granted this should not be the case with a properly written Windows application, but this is the situation.
Greg

Alt gr is necessary for some languages like Polishtnak wrote:Hi xoru,

AltGr must be on right = yes
Fn is not good idea. In Polish language ą=a+altgr this is normal letter.
(ó=o+AltGR,ł=l+....ńćśźżę Ą=A+shift+AltGr
Alt Gr + a = ą
Alt Gr + s = ś
Alt Gr + shift + n = Ń) When Fn is this same i cant use \
(in You keyboard c+Fn) ć=c+AltGr
look this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AltGr_key how many languages uses this key. this same with € etc.
tell me why using print screen and numlock? Meybe Fn+other key using this. In my opinion scroll lock, print screen and pause/break is no necessary. But Pg Up|Down is very usefull without any modificator

meybe this will be better?
3 key is trouble:
[{ and ]} and |\
meybe 2 keys <, and >. making 3 keys < | > in this same size than 2 keys <>
this same with []
when read web page using spacebar and pgup/home
when You writing longest text You uses pgup/down and sometimes home
key insert is not that popular than pgup down
capslock and 2 led indicator will be in one key
meybe change image windows in linux machine? image independent similar in apple keyboard?

Re: A very tiny laptop (7-inch)
I have been waiting for a successor of HP Jornada 720, and very delighted with hearing this.
It would be great if I can have:
* pointing device relocation to between G,H,B, as others request
* straphall, to link to hand strap or wallet chain
* hover-capable digitizer stylus as an option
* core M processor as an option
* integrated LTE modem as an option (I understand hardly possible, but really wanting. PC card modem was a solution for Jornada...)

Re: A very tiny laptop (7-inch)
Hello. I'm a Japanese.
It's very good that there is [-] key on the right place. It is vital for Japanese Romaji input.
But we Japanese needs more keys, namely, [無変換] [変換] [カタカナ/ひらがな] [¥ー] [\ろ]. (plus [半角/全角], which is the same as [`~])
We need these 5 more keys, at least by [Fn] combination.
Please include these keys (keys that send the keycodes for these).
Or instead, if there are many [Fn] combinations which send something different than normal ones, we can edit registory to make them the nessesary keys.
So, please make as many keys as possible send different keycode (for example numpad keys) with [Fn].
