User's ideas for GPD Pocket : About Ubuntu(Linux) Support
Hi, this topic for users' discussion about GPD Pocket, especially Ubuntu/Linux version. Please input your idea about it
Here are my requests:
1. Release patches for GPD Pocket as a separated project.
I personally think it is very difficult for GPD to maintain Linux distribution continuously for long term by alone from the viewpoint of maintenance cost. If they add some customization to Linux kernel and others, please consider some approach as following.
a. Release separated patch about GPD Pocket.
-> It helps user's community can apply them to other Linux distribution or future release of Linux.
b. Upstream first effort
-> GPD engineers and user's community can request merge to upstream OSS project. we can co-work about it for long product life cycle and protect users from security issue.
2. Update bios feature from UEFI
Linux users need Windows just for upgrading BIOS/some device firmware update. Some HW vendor provides its update feature from UEFI menu. It's better for Linux users.
Thank you GPD guys for planning super notebook suggestion for small PC fans:) I hope this project's success!!

Not to take off your enthusiasm but I'm 100% sure when they say Linux, they say it just because it can be installed on it - existing/generic drivers will work.
Edit:
Don't get me wrong, I'm all in for a GNU/Linux pocket device, especially one that looks/feels good and has open source hardware/software - but we won't get that soon

Thank you for your comment.
I've just write my hope. Of course I don't know what GPD say about Linux support on Pocket. I think it's important to write my hope

Re: User's ideas for GPD Pocket : About Ubuntu(Linux) Support
I've been working lately on making sure Linux works properly with the GPDwin, see: http://hansdegoede.livejournal.com/17445.html
This is all mainline / upstream kernel work and includes a working driver for battery monitoring, I expect this work also to benefit people who want to run a standard / mainline kernel on the GPD pocket.
Note I've starting a new thread on this in the GPDwin forum please post any questions / remarks about my work there: http://forum.gpd.hk/t98-improved-linux-support-for-the-gpdwin
